How to measure your bag

You need a tape measure, and a luggage or bathroom scale for the weight.

  1. Pack it first. Measure the bag the way you'll fly with it. A full front pocket can add 3 to 5 cm.
  2. Height. Stand it upright and measure from the floor to the top of the handle, wheels included.
  3. Width. Across the widest point, including side handles and bulging pockets.
  4. Depth. Front to back at the thickest point, with the expansion zip closed.
  5. Weigh it. Use a luggage scale, or weigh yourself holding it on a bathroom scale and subtract.

The bag and airline pairs people look up most.

Before you fly

Do wheels and handles count in carry-on size?

Yes. Airlines measure the outside of the bag including wheels, handles and anything in the pockets, and the gate sizer is built to those numbers. Measure your bag packed.

What's the difference between a carry-on and a personal item?

The carry-on (cabin bag) goes in the overhead bin and is usually around 55 × 40 × 20 cm. The personal item goes under the seat in front of you and is smaller, often 40 × 30 × 15 to 20 cm. Budget airlines usually include only the personal item.

What happens if my bag doesn't fit the sizer?

It goes in the hold. On budget airlines like Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air that comes with a gate fee, often €45 to €70, which is more than adding a bag when you book.

My trip has connecting flights. Which limit applies?

Every flight checks its own limit, so pack to the smallest one. Add your connecting flights in the checker above and GateSizer shows the tightest size and weight across the whole trip.
